Hair shedding and hair loss aren't the same thing. Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Your Baseline Matters More Than an Exact Number
A more useful question than "Am I losing more than 100 hairs?" is: "Am I shedding noticeably more hair than I normally do?"
Someone who normally sheds relatively little may notice a meaningful change before reaching an arbitrary numerical threshold. Someone else may naturally shed closer to the upper end of the expected range without experiencing progressive thinning.
Instead of obsessively counting individual strands, look at trends over several weeks. If the amount of hair in your shower, brush, hands, or clothing has remained relatively consistent and your overall density looks stable, the shedding is more likely to represent ordinary cycling. Yes, Shedding Can Be Seasonal
Hair growth appears to have some degree of seasonal variation. In a study of 823 women evaluated over six years, researchers found an annual pattern in the proportion of hairs entering the telogen phase. Telogen hairs were most common during summer, with a smaller secondary peak observed during spring.[3]
An earlier study following healthy men for 18 months also found seasonal differences. The proportion of actively growing scalp hairs was highest in March and lowest around September, while measured shedding peaked around August and September.[4]
These findings suggest that some people may notice more shedding during particular parts of the year, especially late summer and early fall.
That does not mean every increase in fall shedding should automatically be dismissed as "seasonal hair loss." The evidence supports seasonal variation in hair cycling, but individual experiences vary considerably. A temporary increase followed by a return toward your usual baseline is very different from shedding that continues month after month while your density progressively decreases.
The Pattern Is Often More Important Than the Pile of Hair

Sudden Heavy Shedding Can Have a Delayed Cause
A sudden increase in diffuse shedding can occur with telogen effluvium, a condition in which an unusually large number of follicles transition into the resting phase around the same time.
Triggers can include significant illness, high fever, surgery, childbirth, major psychological stress, substantial weight loss, nutritional problems, certain medications, and hormonal or thyroid abnormalities.[1,2]
One aspect of telogen effluvium frequently causes confusion: the shedding usually does not begin immediately after the trigger. Because follicles spend time in the resting phase before releasing their hairs, increased shedding often becomes noticeable approximately two to three months after the initiating event.[2]
Someone may therefore experience significant shedding in August because of an illness, dietary change, surgery, or stressful event that occurred months earlier. Looking backward can sometimes be more informative than focusing exclusively on what is happening today.
When Shedding Starts Looking Like a Real Problem
There is no single shower-drain photograph or daily hair count that can diagnose hair loss. The overall pattern matters.
A dermatology evaluation becomes more reasonable when increased shedding remains substantially above your baseline for several months, when visible density is decreasing, or when the change continues to progress instead of stabilizing.
Certain patterns deserve earlier attention. These include distinct bald patches, a clearly widening part, progressive recession around the temples or hairline, substantial reduction in ponytail circumference, or noticeable differences between areas of the scalp.
Scalp symptoms also matter. Hair loss accompanied by significant itching, burning, tenderness, scaling, redness, pustules, or scarring should not simply be attributed to normal shedding. These findings can occur with conditions that require a different evaluation than ordinary telogen shedding.
Pay Attention to Hair Caliber, Not Just Hair Fall
Another useful clue is whether the hairs growing from the scalp appear to be changing over time. In androgenetic, or pattern, hair loss, susceptible follicles can gradually produce finer and shorter hairs through a process known as follicular miniaturization. This can make the scalp progressively more visible even when the amount of hair found in the shower does not seem extreme.
That is why someone can have a legitimate hair-loss problem without experiencing dramatic shedding. Conversely, another person may experience a temporary period of substantial shedding without developing permanent follicular loss. Shedding and thinning are related, but they are not interchangeable terms.
Do Not Change Your Entire Routine Because of One Bad Wash Day
Hair shedding naturally fluctuates. One unusually large collection of hair after shampooing is not enough to establish that a treatment has stopped working or that your hair loss has suddenly accelerated.
Consider what happened during the preceding days. Did you go longer between washes? Wear your hair tied up? Brush less frequently? Detangle after several days? Any of these can cause already-shed hairs to appear all at once.
Short-term fluctuations are usually more informative when viewed as part of a longer trend. This is particularly important for people using hair-loss treatments. You do not need to count every strand. Instead, create consistent reference points. Take photographs of your hairline, temples, center part, and crown approximately once a month. Use similar lighting, styling, camera distance, and hair condition whenever possible. Comparing standardized photographs over several months can reveal changes that are difficult to recognize when looking in the mirror every day.
Pay attention to whether shedding eventually settles toward your baseline and whether density remains stable. The combination of shedding trend, visible density, and pattern of change is generally more meaningful than a single daily hair count.

If shedding increases for a short period but your scalp coverage remains stable and the shedding gradually returns toward baseline, observation may be reasonable. If shedding remains persistently elevated, your density is worsening, or the pattern of loss is becoming more defined, it is worth investigating rather than simply waiting.
A dermatologist can distinguish between excessive shedding, pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, inflammatory or scarring disorders, and other causes. Depending on your history and examination, evaluation may also include consideration of medical or nutritional contributors.
The goal is not to react to every hair that falls out. It is to recognize when the behavior of your hair has genuinely changed.
